Debian celebrates
15-year legacy. Debian, arguably the most important
Linux distribution, is readying to celebrate its 15th birthday on
August 16. While a respected and widely-used Linux distribution in
its own right, Debian has, over the 15 years, also been widely used
as the base for numerous other Linux distributions, including the
popular Ubuntu distribution created by South African entrepreneur,
Mark Shuttleworth. more... and

KDE 4.1 rocks the
desktop. KDE 4.1 was finally released to the
public today. After all the controversy since the release of KDE 4.0,
I'm happy to announce that KDE 4.1 simply rocks. The introduction of
KDE 4 marked the introduction of the new Plasma desktop, which
provides not only the panel that you interact with, but also widgets
(or "plasmoids") that extended the desktop further. In KDE
4.1, one of the most welcome changes to Plasma is the return of
multiple and resizable panels from KDE 3. more... and KDE

database. Brian Aker, MySQL's director of architecture at Sun,
suggests web applications, databases without integrated business
processes, cloud environments and multi-core architectures as
potential applications for this trimmed down version of MySQL server.

Atheros makes
friends with Linux. Linux overcame most of its former
driver woes years ago except for one noticeable exception: Wi-Fi
drivers. While many Wi-Fi cards and chipsets were Linux friendly, two
major Wi-Fi chipset vendors, Atheros and Broadcom, kept their drivers
proprietary. Now, things are changing. Atheros has released a true
open-source driver for its latest 802.11n chipsets. more...
