EU Gives Oracle Approval on Sun Acquisition.
Open Solaris LogoThe saga of Oracle's $7 billion acquisition of Sun Microsystems, which started back in April 2009, is near its end. Oracle today announced that the European Commission has finally provided it with unconditional regulatory approval to acquire Sun. The Europeans had held up the acquisition for months over concerns about how the open source MySQL database owned by Sun would exist under Oracle ownership. Yahoo has finally offloaded its open source enterprise e-mail division, Zimbra, to VMware. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the sales price is believed to be far less than the US$350 million Yahoo paid for the company in September 2007. Kara Swisher at Boomtown reported that the sales price was "well below" the acquisition price, but didn't specify an amount. more...

The next generation of Linux notebooks arrives at CES.
TuxAfter Dell broke the ice for pre-installing Linux on desktops and netbooks in 2007, the other major OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) reluctantly tried it out.
