The next
generation of Linux
notebooks arrives at CES. After Dell broke
the ice for pre-installing Linux on desktops and netbooks in 2007,
the other major OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) reluctantly
tried it out. Some, like Lenovo, backed right out of the Linux
desktop market again. As 2010 dawns though, Lenovo and HP are both
back in the pre-installed desktop Linux game. more...

NLE Delights. We're getting
close to the last stops on our tour of non-linear video editors
(a.k.a. NLEs) for Linux. This week I've focused my attention on two
editors, both of which surprised me in many ways. OpenMovieEditor
"... designed for basic movie making capabilities... [and] to be
powerful enough for the amateur movie artist, yet easy to use".
In fact I found OpenMovieEditor to be a surprisingly capable NLE,
modest in its stated goals yet possessing some features not commonly
found in Linux NLEs. more...
YouTube Videos
With Linux. My brother wanted
to put a short business video on YouTube to pull in British clients.
We produced the video using Linux-based tools, half a day or so of
work, and a minimum of additional equipment. Not only can you make
your own videos for business, similar techniques can be used for
creating video tutorials, including screen-casts, and voice-over
narration. Part1... and Part2...
The best Linux
games for kids. The best
collection of Linux educational software for all ages that I know of
is the openSUSE-Edu Li-f-e (Linux for Education) Live DVD. This is a
Live DVD - you simply place the DVD in the computer's DVD drive and
reboot the machine from it. When the machine comes up, you will be
running Linux. Normally, the software won't write to your computer's
hard drive unless you specifically ask it to. more... and Learning

Complete
database administration
package MySQL Workbench. Recently I covered
the MySQL GUI tool MySQL Administrator (see the article “Create a
database with MySQL Administrator“). However, this tool was just
given the official EOL (End of Life) announcement by the MySQL dev
team. Although this is sad news for a tool that had recently become
my standard for working with databases, this death knoll has lead me
to another, even better, tool MySQL Workbench more...
